Britain's Information Commissioner Office (ICO) has imposed a fine of $ 646,000

Saturday, November 10, 2018
Britain's Information Commissioner Office (ICO) has imposed a fine of $ 646,000 (approximately Rs 5 crore) on Facebook. These fines on Facebook are found to be unable to protect the users' data in Cambridge Analytica Scandal.

In its investigation, ICO found that between 2007 and 2014, Facebook allowed app developers to access the user's personal information without permission, which resulted in data usage of 8.7 million users without their permission.

Facebook failed to save privacy: Information commissioner Elizabeth Denham said that Facebook has failed to protect the privacy of its users before and after the Cambridge Analytica Scandal. Being such a large company, Facebook should protect its users' data.

This data was used in the US elections: ICO says that data from Facebook users has been shared with many other organizations including Political Consultancy, Cambridge Analyst's parent company, SCL Group. Subsequently,
Cambridge Analytica profiled the voters with the help of this data, which was used to win Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election.

More than this could be the penalty: ICO said that while the
Cambridge Analytica Scandal came out, the data protection rule of the European Union was not implemented. But if these rules were implemented at that time then Facebook would be fined more on Facebook. According to ICO, Facebook imposed a fine of 17 million pounds (about 1.60 billion rupees) or 4% of global turnover on Facebook.

What Facebook said: Facebook after the British regulator's penalties said that the company is still reviewing the decision of ICO. In a statement, Facebook said, "We do not fully agree with their investigations. We had earlier said that we need more time to investigate Cambridge Analytica and we were investigating this matter since 2015.
